Self-adhesive materials, labels, and stickers enjoy immense popularity within the packaging industry. Frequently employed for both identification and decoration, they serve a dual purpose—being simultaneously practical and aesthetically pleasing. Materials used for items such as food labels, shipping labels, and barcode labels vary widely, exhibiting significant differences in terms of tear resistance, abrasion resistance, light transmission, and print quality. Consequently, the selection of the appropriate label substrate is of paramount importance. Paper Stickers

Paper stickers offer the best cost performance and are also the most eco-friendly option. With low cost, easy processing, and natural biodegradability, they are the preferred material for indoor labels, especially suitable for short-term indoor use. The most common types on the market include coated paper, specialty paper, kraft paper, and tamper-evident paper.

Coated Paper Stickers

Coated paper is the most basic label material, but its color performance in flexographic printing is far from ordinary. After surface coating treatment, it delivers highly saturated and vibrant colors with excellent detail reproduction when printed on a flexo printing machine.

It is worth noting that coated paper has relatively poor weather resistance and is highly susceptible to fading and deformation due to moisture or light exposure. In addition, it is not suitable for direct contact with water or grease, as this can damage the substrate and cause blurred graphics.

Specialty Paper Stickers

Specialty paper features distinctive visual appeal and tactile texture, helping enhance product value and brand recognition. It is highly suitable for applications with premium texture requirements. Common types of specialty paper include kraft-textured paper, woodgrain paper, velvet paper, hot stamping paper, pearlescent paper, and fluorescent paper. Woodgrain paper replicates natural wood textures, hot stamping delivers a metallic finish, and pearlescent paper offers a delicate shimmer effect.

Specialty paper stickers are widely used for premium gift labels, luxury packaging stickers, creative product decoration, wedding invitation stickers, and holiday themed stickers.

Kraft Paper Stickers

Kraft paper is made from natural wood pulp, offering biodegradability along with excellent tensile strength and tear resistance. It features a natural vintage style appearance. When laminated with a matte film, its water resistance is significantly improved, making it less prone to moisture.

Kraft paper is available in thin and thick options. Thin kraft paper is ideal for vintage style packaging stickers, while thick kraft paper is commonly used for planner stickers, shipping seal stickers, and kraft paper food bag labels.

Tamper-Evident Paper Stickers

Tamper-evident paper stickers are made from thin, low-strength paper, sometimes enhanced with special fibers. They can be easily torn into fragments, but cannot be removed intact and reapplied, ensuring zero possibility of reuse. This guarantees the uniqueness and security of label information, making them the preferred choice for anti-counterfeiting applications.

Tamper-evident paper stickers are widely used for pharmaceutical labels, dietary supplement labels, anti counterfeit stickers for disposable products, and agricultural product traceability labels in strictly regulated scenarios.

Plastic Stickers

Plastic stickers offer excellent resistance to sunlight, abrasion, moisture, and rain, with outstanding physical stability. They are the preferred choice for outdoor, industrial, and high-frequency use scenarios. The most common plastic substrates include PVC, PET, clear polyester (high-transparency PET), and PP.

PVC Stickers

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is one of the most widely used self adhesive label materials, known for its broad application range. It features a smooth surface, strong abrasion resistance, and excellent resistance to acids, alkalis, and corrosion.

PVC is available in both flexible and rigid types. Flexible PVC offers high flexibility and is commonly used for insulated tumbler stickers, automotive interior labels, and other applications requiring adhesion to curved surfaces. Rigid PVC provides strong dimensional stability, making it suitable for temporary industrial labels, nameplates, and outdoor advertising stickers.

However, standard PVC may release trace harmful substances at high temperatures and is not biodegradable, making it less environmentally friendly. It is not suitable for direct contact with food packaging or baby products.

PET Stickers

PET (polyethylene terephthalate) offers excellent resistance to oil and chemicals, strong color retention, and is recyclable, making it highly eco-friendly. Its tensile strength is 2–3 times higher than PVC, and it maintains stability without deformation or cracking within a temperature range of -40°C to 120°C.

PET stickers can be finished with matte, glossy, or frosted textures. Common applications include mobile phone battery stickers, charger label stickers, food packaging labels, durable industrial labels, and medical device labels.

Clear Stickers

Clear stickers are made from high-transparency PET material. With over 90% light transmission, they appear nearly “invisible,” making them ideal for a clean, no-label look. They offer excellent dimensional clarity and abrasion resistance, but care must be taken during application to avoid air bubbles.

Clear stickers are widely used for glass decorative stickers, electronic product housing stickers, and cosmetic bottle labels, delivering a premium and seamless appearance.

PP Stickers

PP (polypropylene) offers excellent corrosion resistance and is recyclable. With low density and light weight, it helps reduce both transportation and usage costs. Its flexibility allows it to conform to slightly curved surfaces. Compared to PVC, PP is more stable at high temperatures and does not release harmful substances, making it a safer option.

However, PP can become brittle in low-temperature environments, and its tensile strength is slightly lower than PET, making it less suitable for cold conditions or high-frequency use scenarios.

PP stickers are commonly used for food packaging labels, chemical product labels, outdoor promotional stickers, and beverage bottle labels.

Different application scenarios place different demands on label materials. For outdoor applications, PET, PVC, and PP are preferred due to their excellent durability and weather resistance. For indoor use, coated paper and specialty paper are more suitable, offering superior printability and cost efficiency. In humid environments, PET and PP are recommended for their strong moisture resistance. For high-temperature conditions, PET is the optimal choice thanks to its outstanding thermal stability.
